Sculpture garden accommodating 50 sculpture sites set within a naturalist layout of paths and garden features
The Sydney and Walda Besthoff Sculpture Garden occupies approximately eleven acres in City Park adjacent to the New Orleans Museum of Art. The garden is located within a mature existing landscape of pines, magnolias, and live oaks surrounding two lagoons. The expanded garden has sites for sculpture, as well as an outdoor amphitheatre and stage, pedestrian bridges and walkways, a new gallery, and an outdoor learning environment.
The full scope of the work included gallery, covered terrace, restrooms, office, catering kitchen, receiving areas, janitor’s closet, storage, mechanical, electrical, valve room for sprinkler system and an enclosed mechanical yard. Additional work for the garden area included two pedestrian bridges and one “subaqueous” pedestrian bridge, two weir walls and other water management infrastructure; a network of boardwalks, on-grade paths and terraces; an amphitheatre with floating stage; 25+ sculptural works, and a perimeter enclosure.
