The Westmoreland Museum of American Art, established in 1959, is dedicated to exhibition, community, and education. To mark its 50th anniversary, the museum embarked on a significant expansion and renovation aimed to emphasize the importance of the Arts and the Museum’s vital role in the Greensburg community and the region. The result is a dramatically transformed and revitalized building that, in integrating old and new, points to the Museum’s history while looking to the future.
Project scope included reconfigured interior spaces, new entry and renovated lobby, enlarged group entry, Museum shop, expanded range of galleries for temporary and permanent collections (including new gallery in cantilevered wing), studio for children’s programs, multi-purpose space for community gatherings and events, cafe, consolidated administration offices, and high-density collections storage space directly linked to new dock/receiving area. The reimagined Museum experience extends to new landscape and sculpture garden. Altieri was charged with designing state-of-the-art mechanical systems for the project, highlighting the importance of sustainability to the building transformation. New MEPF systems were incorporated throughout the building. All systems were designed with Revit 3D modeling. Additional services included energy modeling and survey and evaluation of existing physical plant for reuse, expansion, or replacement.
